It is a mixture of war and fantasy/fairy tale. Really hard to describe but it is just incredible. Very moving and enchanting and this despite being a 15 (in the UK), probably justifiably, for violence. It is for me, a perfect movie. Incredibly beautiful. Anyway, I saw it twice: once yesterday and again today... both times I was supposed to be with people but did not let their absence stop me from seeing it. Oh, it's in spanish with subtitles but that shouldn't stop you from seeing it: it ranks higher than most, if not all (in my current opinion), english language films. I don't seem to have much problem with subtiled films mostly: I'm normally there because I believe from what I've heard that they will be visually beautiful and they often are. I've found in the days afterwards I'll swear I saw parts of such a film in english as the languages just merge in your head.

I've been trying to watch one film every fortnight this semester. Placed a strict no-comedy restriction on this though. I don't see the point watching a comedy at the cinema: for me, I want to see visually beautiful, meaningful films on the big screen. I guess I don't have a lot of time for comedies mostly. I must see Napoleon Dynamite though because every else has and it's just a popular culture reference (among students at least) you need to have. I want to watch the comedies by Charlie Kaufman like Being John Malkovich when I can. Anyway enough talk.

Films I saw at the cinema this semester for reference: The Magician, Volver, World Trade Center, Children of Men, The Prestige, Breaking and Entering, Casino Royale and The Page Turner (this was my first film of this weekend - of three cinema visits (FACT cinema in Liverpool made a small fortune this weekend) - it's french and I dragged my brother along).

All News is Moo(t)

Last week we had a woman balancing a tray of cups on the top of hair in the background of a BBC Newsnight interview, tonight at the beginning of BBC News 24's 1 o'clock in the morning news a cow is distinctly heard mooing. again.
My lack of posting could well be due to starting out at Keele University. I'm studying history and english here - i nearly said there but i'm on our wonderful 650-acre campus so it makes no sense. Mine is a rather boring combination of subjects in one sense - here almost any combination of subject is allowed: think astrophysics(if our cash-strapped uni doesn't finally close that department: to be fair, even Oxford works with multimillion pounds debts) and english and you'll probably find someone here doing it: my guess is a lot of people's choices are quite conservative but some aren't and many universities would not make it so easy for people to do even the simplest dual honours degrees.

Casaulty Jargon

I just finished watching my video of casuality and finally remmembered to look up the meaning of tackicardic or however it is spelt. It's shocking how few entries it has on Google. Someone needs to write a "the science behind casualty" website/article... if this stuff really exists it would be nice to know what it is.

My Initial Thoughts on Harry Potter and The Half Blood Prince

I am currently reading Harry Potter 6(though not quite at the speed the bbc reviewer is here(possible spoiler warning) and I intend to place some thoughts on this blog as I go along. These will be short, precise, and especially in reference to secrets revealed in the novel(I have read one so far), non-specific. Thus, of course, glancing over them before reading the book will not hurt, unless you mind knowing where secrets are revealed, maybe small nesissary hints of them and some other minor details, but these are intended for fellow readers and should be, by design, cryptic. Feel free to comment on these as they come - and these will not be viewed as a spoiler-free zone by me, although please stick to chapter focus of posts.

Before I write about the book, I must note that the store I bought my book from obviously unsealed and handled books maybe as early as Thursday - disappointing. The books were presented to us at 5 to 12 in a store-labelled open-top box with nothing to stop us from picking a copy up and reading the first pages. The first copy sold was between 12 and 12:01.

Chapter 1 - I found this chapter refreshing and clever and a great-recap(I for one cannot remmember the previous novels fully). Adds an interesting new dimension to the relationship between the real world and the magic world(i know i know, it's real too).
Chapter 2 - I think the insight of this chapter will enlighten my reading of scenes involving a certain character and many other scenes from previous novels. This is a key thing I was looking for Rowling to be doing in this book.
Chapter 3 - I really liked the use of the (incomplete) news clippings. A very funny chapter especially for those who like seeing a certain family tormented(don't we all?).

If I said too much, don't read any more of my posts on the book.

A Belated(why not late?) I like the phrase "mind-forg'd manacles. I think my favourite part is about the soldiers as helpfully explained by Nicholas Marsh. It's a very radical political statement: Blake is saying how the King does not care about his soldiers blood. But more widely he is condemning the ruling elites who persecute the common people in his world around him. Any additional comments on this poem London or The Lamb(which I still remember) would be appreciated.

Wandering down the chartered streets
Near where the charter'd Thames does flow
I mark in every face I meet
Notes of Weakness, notes of woe

In every cry of every man,
In every Infants cry of fear,
In every voice, in every ban,
The mind-forg'd manacles I hear.

How the Chimney-sweeps cry
The blackened Church appals
And hapless soldiers sigh
In blood down Palace walls

But most thro' the midnight streets I hear
The youthful Harlots curse
Blasts the new-born Infants cry
And blights with plague the marriage hearse.

Should "hell" be a swear word?

Bowing to calls from the American Right(I wish I got that much attention!), I am removing the "swearing" ("Why the hell aren't...") from my blog title.
Okay so "hell" is swearing but should it really be called so? I need to have an indepth knowledge of Blake's Songs of Innocence and Experience for my Literature exam and some poems are short enough to be memorised.

Nicholas Marsh in his excellent book on Blake's poetry explains this poem as the child's innocent view of the creator which moves from observations of what is seen in the lamb and saying these characteristics must then be of God too. This is a neat way of linking the two stanzas and linking in to the the opposing poem in Experience, The Tiger, where the question asked of the tiger is who "dare frame thy fearful symmetry". This poem questions the simplistic view that God is gentle and kind by showing that an "fearful" creature was also created by him. Marsh's view, as far as I can see, fails to mention that the character described in the second stanza is probably a reference to Jesus. Jesus "became a little child" and is described as "meak and mild" and as the "Lamb [of God]". Blake probably knew John 1 wherein Jesus is refered to by the term the "word" and it is said of him "All things came to be through him, and without him nothing came to be." so Jesus was part of the creation process or the creator.

Additional remarks on these poems are welcome!

Poetry

A Neat HTML Snippet

Just found this cool piece of code:
< meta http-equiv="Page-Enter" content="progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Pixelate(Duration=2)">
< meta http-equiv="Page-Exit" content="progid:DXImageTransform.Microsoft.Pixelate(Duration=2)">
from http://xxxriotsxxx.blogspot.com/.

You can see the effect these two tiny lines of code create by clicking the link above. I was surprised that I found out the result from a BBC News Alert (You can download the BBC News Alerts program here.) before someone from downstairs told me: they must still be transfixed on the screen.

Yes AC Milan were beaten by Liverpool. I was earlier wishing this would not happen for the sake of all the kids who will have to sit through their dads retelling the "story"(read: lots of indignation there) of the match even twenty years later(as promised by the commentator earlier who had also "suffered"(my word, admittedly) through a retelling as a child of the last time Liverpool won this glass/drinks bottle/whatever-they-call-it-these-days). Will I take my son to a football match? Surprisingly yes(aside: perish the day) ... with a notebook in my hand tallying the number of times the ball passes the middle of the pitch line or collecting some other "useless"(in the words of true football fans) statistics. My interest in football(did i just type that?) is, if at all, purely academic.

Wikipedia links: Football - notable for it's lack of "Criticisms of" section

A Post on the Last Post

That last post was obviously vastly overdue. Maybe it could even be seen as an interactive work of art. While Half Life 2, among others, pushes the boundries of in-game physics and 3D graphics, it can barely be considered art; or if it is it is a ugly art in my opinion. The Sims 2, taking off from it's predecesor and far from perfect even now, tries to emulate real-life. This being so begs the question: Is it boring? Absolutely not. But this must be qualified. It really depends on how it is played. As a game, it allows the player to choose how active and animated a thing it shows. Of course so far it sounds like I am describing a movie-maker and to many players, Sims 2 is just that as this latest version can spit out AVI files at the tip of a hat. But as I was saying, it can be enthralling and exciting with Sims fighting each other or making love (in the way only sims can - it's not porno - complete with fireworks and sheets bobbing(that's the word!) up and down playfully and yet ambigiously).

I guess I do play it boringly. Generally, I'm building up a set of dynastic families that share a neighbourhood, intermarry, have pesky kids(actually Simkids are rarely pesky - at least no more than normal sims with pathfinding that does occasionally foul up - maybe because you can't take them to the supermarket yet) that later grow into teenagers and adults and have kids of their own. It's interesting to see how it shapes out. This long-play form of playing does mean shortcuts including lots of money cheating but, maybe sadly, more specifically a lack of excitement in one sense. In my very ordered (and yet not quite ordered enough) world in Sims 2, there are no affairs, divorces, crazy characters with crazy careers(like the paranormal one included in the first expansion pack TS2 University). I suppose I often miss many of the more interesting animations and elements of the game by speeding through at the highest speed (especially while my sims are in college: a rather long arduous process: very much how I view the prospect of university for myself at the moment). But when I do slow down, I probably slow down more than most. One of the most interesting things about TS2 is that you really can leave the game running without touching it and just watch. Probably the most interesting time I do this is when Sims first arrive at a new lot or house and intuitively start interacting with each other while lined up outside the new place. Another thing I sometimes do is hold down the rotate key on a house and just spin round it. Such things highlight the beauty of the game.

I mentioned earlier that the game is also intricate. By this I mean, Sims actually indent the sofas they sit on, the chess games they play are quasi-real, clocks really do show the true in-game time and have hands that move, my sim(just now) really does look like she is playing the piece I hear on the piano(the hands seem to move right: though I'm no expert) and when sims chat on the computer, the screen really does show a messenger-like window complete with new lines of text appearing.

The game-play I detailed in my second paragraph is my own unique style of playing the game. Unlike many games, TS2 does allow for many different play styles. From building charactes and houses in amazingly detailed in-game editors to very different ways of actually playing the game with the time running. This is well-encaptulated in the dualisms of death and life, success and failure. In this game, failure states are just as fun as success states: torturing sims is ultimately fun: Many players indulge their passion for the game in realisings sims fears, seeing them go mad and then, or of course in any order or way that suits their fancy, killing them(yes, they really do look like they're drowning when they drown: it's sad but quite funny: the beauty being that they are not quite yet so humanoid that is evil to do such things: they will I guess always be called Sims). So, in concluding, I invite anyone who plays Sims 2 to write similar but different blog posts about their unique play style or indeed just comment on this post.

Edit: The Obligitory Wikipedia link: The Sims 2

Wikipedia

One of my many interests that doesn't fit in the title above is Wikipedia. Enlighten me please! (This quote is also very sexist: generation implies both men and women in an certain age bracket: this quote assumes that GS is made up of only men.)
In the meantime, let's just take on this ridiculous "Generation Sex" concept. Firstly, sex was enjoyed by every generation and the people of the 70s were probably more obsessed than most. (A close reading of Song of Solomon, the bible's very own erotic poem, reveals even in bible times breast size was a concern as it is today. Though, thankfully, they didn't have Page 3.) Secondly, it's unfair to Christians, young priests-in-training, people in comas and many other sensible souls to suggest that we are all obsessed with sex and proud of it.

Visit Jade's website

Jade is a band in Liverpool:
www.jadetheband.com
The Long awaited launch of their site(which I've seen - it rocks) is coming soon!

My first real shopping trip

Maybe it's some kind of rite of passage but navigating a supermarket for the first time sure isn't easy. No, I revise that it's sheer hell(metaphorically at least). I mean where does one find custard powder? Or stuffing? I mean there are many easy things: vegetables(if you know what the particular one looks like), drinks(I mean who misses hundreds of bottles?). But past that things get a little harder. And what shopping list doesn't have a few obscure items. I'm relatively okay: I don't mind asking customer services to label my list with isles or asking a question(to multiple assistants if needed to find a precise location). Then you have the nightmare of packing bags. Even a basket full takes more than one bag and this takes time: and even if the till assistant helps you(such as at ASDA(sometimes, if you're lucky)) that still stops them from serving other customers. One man's customer service is another man's customer disservice. In the event, I survived as ASDA had a cafe where I could sit down and pack my bag properly and take the crumpled fivers back out of my unzipped trousers pockets to disposite them somewhere safe.

A few practical suggestions:
1. An Index of items needed to be created
2. Stop moving around items!
3. Online supermarket shopping would work IF the customer was contacted if some item could not be found instead of the customer getting some substandard crap alternative.

Just testing.

Been to the doctors today...

When I came back from the pharmacy, I had a sealed package containing no less than 7 boxes. This is mainly because Jack somehow managed to place his country's interests over his own. Some form of martyrdome. Mainly because his wife died(no sympathy please: he is nothing more than a construct in our minds: if you dare say he's more, get a life!)

I think James Bond married someone in one movie and then she was killed later. But knowing Bond he probably went on some sort of revenge trip(yeah, that's what he was up to in Die Another Day, for the unlearned out there.)

But Jack and James...
They BOTH fight terrorists
The terrorists they fought were in BOTH cases riddiculous charactatures... James fought media and oil tycoons mostly, Jack seems to go after terrorists who are incredibly organised, civilised(well that word's just there for effect) and in other ways not Osama Bin Ladenish (who apparently has a sister in law. If it was some other celebrity, such an interview would seem ridiculous and petty but in this case...)
They BOTH are highly moment in history specific... James Bond appeals to Cold Warian times, Jack is most definitely post-Stalin, post-Hitler, post-Cold war and post-911 which seems to work for us now for some reason

In any case, 24 rocks!

While I am pretty amazing...

... the crazy remarks people are leaving as comments are quite disturbing. Both we lost.

So in the World Cup 2006, english people, one and all, support a good team!

Expandable Posts: Good or Bad

I said bad. so they're gone. Any ideas? Thought not. Well I'll just have to keep on rambling or repeating myself. See I repeated myself or rather copy and pasted myself. Why do we talk about repeating ourselves? Instead of repeating what we say. That's english for you: irregular, stupid and in need of a good old smack. But who's there to give it one? Now the french, they know how to discipline their langauge.

Hi.
